Celebrity Chef Martin Yan on Kitchen Designs

If Yan can cook, so can you! How familiar this statement sounds, and for those growing up in front of cooking channels on the television, can fondly recall this funny speaking Chinese man from the Bay area of San Francisco, chopping and cooking away in the most captivating cooking series of that era. And though, through the many years, we have seen more celebrity chefs appearing on the tube, we are constantly reminded of this pioneer, the first Chinese man to be aired on mainstream American broadcast!
In a rare cooking showcase appearance in Malaysia hosted by Signature Kitchen and Asian Food Channel, celebrity chef Martin Yan not only held up to the promise of an engaging and tasty session, but he imparted many great tips for wonderful cooking in the home. For starters, he emphasized that the golden key to good cooking starts from great kitchen design. During the one and the half (1.5) hour showcase, he stressed that functional kitchen design should include five (5) critical planning zones.
Being one of the most research and applied principle around, the five (5) planning zones must be the centrepiece of the kitchen layout. A good kitchen design should carry a layout that places the five (5) most common work sites in the most efficient distance apart with the least obstruction possible.
In most conventional kitchen designs, the five (5) most common sites are the washing, preparation, cooking, consumables and non-consumables storage. Ideally, the distance between each area should be between four to nine (4-9) feet apart. These five (5) zones should also not be cutting across the main household traffic walkway, such as the kitchen entrance, walkway to the adjoining room or to the home backyard.
Chef Martin Yan also highlighted another key ingredient to effective kitchen design. Kitchen layouts must be given ample considerations to efficient exhaust and good lighting. Utilizing the intelligent showcase kitchen at the 3rd Place in Signature Kitchen headquarters, Chef Martin Yan commended on the functional and beautiful kitchen design available. He even jokingly hinted for one!
